Each smaller bag has a zipper all the way around it. Unzip it and the bag lifts right off. Zip it back on the same way.

Very. Once the zipper is closed, the bag is locked firmly in place and won't come loose on its own, even in a packed overhead bin. It only comes off when you unzip it yourself.
